As a young Portuguese tenor on the verge of an international career, José de Eça trained under the guidance of his father, the distinguished opera baritone and lieder singer José de Oliveira Lopes. As a student, he attended the Conservatório Superior de Música de Gaia and currently works with Douglas Susu-Mago.

Eça began his professional opera career as a teenager, performing in some of Mozart’s most iconic operas, including Die Zauberflöte and Le Nozze di Figaro. More recently, he sang the roles of Cappello (Il Bravo) and Nick (La Fanciulla del West) at the Wexford Festival.

He made his oratorio soloist debut with the Círculo Portuense de Ópera (CPO), performing Haydn’s Missa in Angustiis and Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle. As a recitalist, he performs throughout Portugal and frequently abroad.

On the international stage, José de Eça has performed in numerous venues across various countries, including:

  • Brazil (Teatro Camões)
  • Chile (Teatro de Las Condes)
  • France (Fondation Gulbenkian)
  • Italy (IPSAR)
  • Ethiopia (Claude Debussy Festival)
  • Zimbabwe (HIFA – Harare International Festival of the Arts)
  • South Africa

More recently, he has performed at:

  • Meng Minwei Concert Hall (Beijing, China)
  • Xinghai Concert Hall (Guangzhou, China)
  • Cairo Opera House (Egypt)

As an instructor, he has given masterclasses at the Xinghai Conservatory in China and Universidad Mayor in Chile.
Throughout his career, José de Eça has collaborated with renowned pianists and conductors, including: Paule Grimaldi, Teixeira Lopes, Adriano Jordão, Mário Mateus, José Eduardo Gómez, Ángel González, Armando Vidal, Jonathan Brandani, and Luis Costa, among others.
