Born in Münster in 1966, he currently lives in Berlin and Wesenberg. She began her piano studies at the age of 5, learning from Anna Meier, Frau Scholz, Angela von Moons, Rolf Koenen, Alan Marks and Jeffrey Burns, among many others. As a Käthe Dorsch Foundation scholarship recipient, he studied piano at the Universität der Künste (graduated in 1992) and at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler (graduated in 1994) in Berlin. After his studies, a master class in contemporary piano music in Rheinsberg was the initial spark for Surberg's intense involvement with contemporary music.

In addition to his commitment as a founding member of the mosaik ensemble, Ernst Surberg initiates new projects and also performs his own works. Recently, he has written the music for three works at Schauspiel Köln, for “Der letzte Riesenalk”, “wozuwozuozu”, with Anna Viebrock, “Das Masion am Südpol” (Schauspiel Basel), “Warten auf Godot” (conductor: Thomas Dannemann) , “von morgens bis mitternachts” (Centraltheater Leipzig, Christiane Pohle). As a soloist, as well as in ensemble and orchestra, Surberg has performed numerous world premieres, including works by Stefan Streich, Michael Beil, Enno Poppe, Klaus Lang, Agostino DiScipio, Kaj Duncan David, Rama Gottfried, Johannes Kreidler, Stefan Prins, Iris ter Schiphorst, Karen Power, Katharina Roserberger, Marisol Jiminez, Sara Glojnaric, Woytek Blecharz, Sergej, Newski, Kirsten Reese, Sarah Memtsov and many others. The WDR broadcast the work “Pentecost”, a collaborative work with Bettina Junge in a program by Martina Seeber.
