Joseph Haydn wrote Stabat Mater in 1767, shortly after entering the court of Prince Esterházy in Eisenstadt. Haydn composed most of his liturgical works in the first half of his career; but it seems that they were not very successful, unlike Stabat Mater, which began to circulate throughout Europe and be copied on multiple occasions, which improved the reputation of the Austrian composer in terms of composition and specialization in the vocal genre.

Joseph Haydn composed an extensive work for 4 soloists (soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor and baritone), mixed choir, 2 oboes, 2 English horns, strings and organ.
